Key Takeaways
A Long Island elementary school music teacher is facing serious criminal charges after a vigilante group used artificial intelligence technology to expose his alleged attempts to engage in sexually explicit communications with someone he believed was a minor.
Mark Verity, 37, of Islip, was arrested on October 18, 2025, at a family member's home in Mattituck by the Suffolk County Police Department's Digital Forensic Unit.
He has been charged with attempted dissemination of indecent material to a minor in the first degree and two counts of attempted use of a child less than 17 years of age in a sexual performance, according to a press release from Suffolk County Police.
AI technology used in an undercover operation
The arrest followed an elaborate sting operation conducted by Predator Poachers Long Island, a vigilante group that poses as minors online to identify potential child predators.
In this case, a 29-year-old member of the group served as a decoy, using AI-driven appearance modification technology to make herself appear younger in photos and videos shared online.
According to the group, Verity initiated contact on social media, sending a photo of himself and engaging in what he believed were conversations with a 13-year-old girl.
The organization then employed additional AI tools to trace Verity's online activity and pinpoint his physical location.
"When he confessed, he realized his life that he'd been living for the past 37 years was now going to be completely off," Mike Villani of Predator Poachers Long Island told Fox News Digital.
Villani added: "If you're doing really heinous, evil stuff like Verity was doing, then you must have in the back of your mind that it's only a matter of time before something like this does happen.
Normally, when we confront people, they say they didn't do this, or they didn't do that, but in this case, Mr. Verity was very forthcoming about all the stuff he tried to do with this teenager."
School district responds to "deeply troubling" situation
Verity had worked as a music teacher at Wading River Elementary School in the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District for approximately a decade before his suspension on October 15, 2025.
The district removed him from the classroom immediately after administrators and parents viewed the confrontation video posted by Predator Poachers.
Superintendent Gerard W. Poole addressed the situation in a letter to parents, stating: "I am writing as a follow-up to last night's message regarding a Wading River School teacher who has been removed from the classroom and will not be permitted on school grounds pending the outcome of the investigation."
In subsequent communications reported by local media, Poole described the case as a "deeply troubling situation for our entire community," adding that "the charges brought forward are heinous and deeply disturbing, and they stand in direct opposition to the values we uphold as a school district."
Suffolk County Police emphasized in their statement: "Verity is a teacher in the Shoreham-Wading River Central School District. At this point in the investigation, there is no evidence that any student was a victim. The district is cooperating with the investigation."
Court proceedings and bail
Verity appeared in Suffolk County Criminal Court in Central Islip on October 18, where Judge Mary Kate Mullen set his bail at $75,000 cash, $150,000 bond, or $750,000 partially-secured bond.
According to his defense attorney, Matthew J. Martinez, Verity's parents indicated they would use their house as collateral to help secure their son's release.
The married father of two remained largely silent during his brief arraignment hearing, according to court observers.
