Key Takeaways
Wonder Studios, an AI-driven creative studio backed by executives from OpenAI and Google DeepMind, has raised $12 million in seed funding as it positions itself at the forefront of artificial intelligence in entertainment production.
Funding round attracts major tech investors
The funding round was led by Atomico, a European venture capital firm, with participation from existing investors LocalGlobe and Blackbird.
Adobe Ventures also joined the round, along with Erik Huggers, a key architect behind BBC iPlayer, and Upside Ventures, established by the YouTube group the Sidemen.
The London-based studio was founded in April 2025 by Xavier Collins and Justin Hackney, with Collins serving as CEO and Hackney as chief creative officer.
Prior to the seed round, Wonder had raised approximately $3 million in pre-seed funding from investors including executives from ElevenLabs, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Campfire Studios, and Activision Blizzard.
Reducing production costs through AI technology
Wonder aims to dramatically reduce the cost of high-quality video production by leveraging artificial intelligence tools alongside traditional filmmaking techniques.
According to Collins, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the company has been able to harness AI while blending it with traditional storytelling.
Hackney previously stated that traditional high-end television and film production typically costs between $500,000 and $1 million per minute, while Wonder can reduce that to $10,000 to $20,000 per minute using AI technology.
Recent projects demonstrate the studio's capabilities
The company has seen significant demand for its services over the past six months. Wonder produced an AI-powered music video for Lewis Capaldi's song "Something in the Heavens," created in collaboration with Google DeepMind, YouTube, and Universal Music Group.
Another major project is "Beyond the Loop," a YouTube anthology series set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has fallen under android control.
The series has been renewed for a second season after accumulating 1.5 million views. Wonder is also developing an upcoming documentary with Campfire Studios about the Menendez Brothers' case.
Plans for expansion and IP development
The new funding will be used to double Wonder's engineering team and accelerate the company's push into intellectual property ownership and original content production.
Collins emphasized that the studio's vision centers on combining Hollywood filmmaking excellence with AI-powered creative freedom, empowering both established directors and emerging creators.
Hackney added that the next decade will define what creativity looks like in the age of AI, stating that their mission is to ensure the future belongs to storytellers.
He described their work as creating a bridge where technology and artistry grow together, calling it the beginning of a new creative renaissance rather than the end of creativity.
