The Qwen App launch is part of Alibaba's broader strategic pivot toward artificial intelligence. Earlier this year, CEO Eddie Wu announced a three-year investment of 380 billion yuan (approximately $53 billion) in AI and cloud infrastructure, an amount exceeding the company's total AI spending over the previous decade.
"We see AI as a once-in-a-generation industry transformation opportunity, and the primary goal of our AI strategy is to pursue the realisation of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)," Wu said during an earnings call, according to Analytics India Magazine.
At the company's 2025 Apsara Conference in September, Wu positioned Qwen as the "Android of the AI era," emphasizing Alibaba's open-source strategy. He also stated, "AGI will not only amplify human intelligence, it will unlock human potential," according to industry reports.
E-commerce integration and competitive landscape
Alibaba plans to distinguish its AI assistant through deep integration with its extensive e-commerce and service ecosystem.
The company intends to incorporate digital maps, food delivery, travel booking, office tools, shopping, education, and healthcare services directly into the Qwen App.
This approach aims to create an AI concierge that can handle tasks like price comparisons, order tracking, and automated shopping within the Alibaba universe, particularly its Taobao marketplace.
The app is being offered free to users as Alibaba works to build a substantial user base before implementing monetization strategies.
This approach reflects the company's need to catch up with competitors in China's consumer AI market, where it currently trails ByteDance's Doubao and Tencent's Yuanbao in user numbers.
The Qwen App represents a renamed and upgraded version of Alibaba's previous Tongyi application, unifying the consumer product with the company's well-known AI model family.
