Key takeaways
FS Italiane and Microsoft have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the Italian railway operator's digital transformation through artificial intelligence, marking one of Europe's most ambitious technology collaborations in the transport sector.
The agreement will provide advanced AI productivity tools to over 50,000 employees while promoting responsible innovation across key business processes.
The partnership positions FS Italiane as a frontrunner in digitalization and sustainability, consistent with the company's Strategic Plan for 2025-2029.
By integrating Microsoft's AI technologies with FS's operational expertise, the collaboration seeks to modernize mobility services, enhance efficiency, and strengthen competitiveness in the European market.
Under the agreement, FS Italiane will deploy Microsoft 365 Copilot to its workforce of more than 50,000 employees.
The AI-powered productivity assistant will be accompanied by comprehensive training and skills-development programs designed to ensure effective adoption and support cultural transformation within the organization.
Stefano Antonio Donnarumma, CEO and General Manager of FS Italiane, emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration.
"The collaboration with Microsoft represents an additional step in the Group's transformation strategy," Donnarumma stated. "Artificial Intelligence allows us to innovate processes, enhance skills, and contribute to mobility that increasingly focuses on people. It is also an opportunity to support the growth of our employees, guiding them through a professional and cultural evolution that places knowledge and new technologies at the service of the country's development."
The partnership is expected to deliver improvements in operational efficiency through streamlined processes and reduced time spent on repetitive tasks.
Enhanced service design will enable more personalized, responsive, and efficient products for the rail and mobility ecosystem, while skills development programs will ensure employees can leverage AI tools to focus on higher-value tasks.
Microsoft's commitment to Italian infrastructure
The partnership builds on Microsoft's broader commitment to Italy's digital infrastructure.
In October 2024, Microsoft announced a 4.3 billion euro investment to expand its hyperscale cloud and AI datacenter infrastructure in Italy, coupled with plans to provide digital skills training to more than one million Italians by the end of 2025.
Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business, highlighted the potential impact of the collaboration.
"We are proud to collaborate with the FS Group to accelerate their AI-based transformation," Althoff said. "By combining the Group's deep industrial expertise with Microsoft's cutting-edge AI technologies, we will help realise their vision for smarter, more sustainable and more personalised travel, setting a new standard for modern mobility in Italy."
Integration of AI into railway operations
The partnership reflects FS Italiane's commitment to aligning digitalization with sustainability objectives.
By integrating AI systems into rail and transport services, the company aims to optimize operations, simplify interactions between people and technology, and improve the quality of daily mobility for millions of passengers.
Microsoft 365 Copilot will serve as the primary interface through which FS employees access AI agents designed to support operational decision-making, service quality, and system performance.
These tools are expected to strengthen monitoring capabilities and help ensure more reliable services for customers while optimizing overall railway system performance.
The agreement builds on longstanding cooperation between FS Italiane and Microsoft across various innovation projects in recent years.
