Key takeaways
Google's AI-powered search feature has experienced explosive growth throughout 2025, fundamentally reshaping how billions of people access information online.
What began as an experimental tool has evolved into one of the company's most successful product launches in recent years.
AI Overviews, which provides AI-generated summaries at the top of Google search results, reached 1.5 billion monthly users by May 2025, according to announcements made at Google I/O 2025.
The feature then grew to 2 billion monthly users by July 2025, as confirmed during Alphabet's Q2 2025 earnings call.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, shared the milestone with investors. "AI Overviews, a Google Search feature offering an AI summary of search results available in 200 countries and territories, now has 2 billion monthly users, up from 1.5 billion in May 2025," Pichai said during the earnings call, according to TechCrunch.
The feature now operates across more than 200 countries and territories, representing approximately 18% of the global population.
It generates AI-powered summaries for complex queries, drawing from multiple web sources to provide comprehensive answers without requiring users to click through numerous links.
AI driving increased search activity
Contrary to predictions that AI summaries would reduce search usage, Google reports the opposite effect. In the company's largest markets, AI Overviews is driving significant growth in user engagement.
"As people use AI Overviews, we see they're happier with their results, and they search more often," said Liz Reid, Vice President and Head of Google Search, at the I/O conference in May 2025.
"In our biggest markets like the US and India, AI Overviews are driving over 10% growth in the types of queries that show them."
Reid emphasized the feature's speed advantage in an interview with Search Engine Land: "We're delivering this at the speed people expect of Google Search – AI Overviews delivers the fastest AI responses in the industry."
The technology is powered by custom versions of Google's Gemini 2.5 models, designed specifically for search applications.
These models enable the system to handle increasingly complex queries while maintaining accuracy and relevance.
New AI mode expands capabilities
Alongside AI Overviews, Google launched AI Mode, a conversational search experience that allows users to ask complex, multi-part questions with follow-ups.
According to Pichai's remarks during the Q2 earnings call, AI Mode surpassed 100 million monthly active users across the United States and India.
At Google I/O 2025, Pichai outlined the company's broader vision: "We're in a new phase of the AI platform shift. Where decades of research are now becoming reality for people, businesses, and communities all over the world."
Reid positioned AI as an enhancement rather than a replacement for traditional search.
In an interview with The Economic Times, she stated, "We don't view AI as replacing search in the search experience. We view it as augmenting, enabling us to reinvent search."
The company also announced that early AI Mode users are asking queries two to three times longer than traditional searches, indicating users feel more comfortable expressing complex information needs in natural language.
Impact on search ecosystem and monetization
Google began integrating advertisements directly into AI Overviews in October 2024, addressing questions about how the feature would generate revenue.
During Alphabet's Q1 2025 earnings call, Senior Vice President Philipp Schindler indicated that monetization rates for AI Overviews match traditional search results.
"For AI Overviews overall, we see the monetization at approximately the same rate, which gives us a strong base on which we can innovate even more," Schindler told investors, according to MediaNama's coverage of the earnings call.
Total Google Search revenue grew 10% year-over-year to $50.7 billion in Q1 2025, while Alphabet's overall revenue reached $90.2 billion, representing 12% growth.
The company's capital expenditures increased 43% year-over-year to $17.2 billion, reflecting heavy investment in AI infrastructure.
Reid acknowledged the ongoing transition affects different stakeholders differently but emphasized Google's commitment to the web ecosystem.
"We really care about the health of the web more than anybody else. It is essential, not simply for AI Overviews, but for the product," Reid said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
Google's aggressive expansion of AI features positions the company at the forefront of the AI search revolution, though questions remain about long-term impacts on website traffic and the broader internet ecosystem.
