Key takeaways
The feature launched in beta in the United States on January 14, 2026, and will roll out to eligible Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers over the next week, according to a blog post from Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio.
How personal intelligence works
Personal Intelligence connects Gemini to Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search, allowing the AI to reason across these data sources when responding to queries.
Unlike previous capabilities that could retrieve basic information from Google apps, the new feature enables Gemini to make connections between different types of content.
"Whether it's connecting a thread in your emails to a video you watched or finding nuance in your photo library, Gemini now understands context without being told where to look," Woodward wrote in the blog post.
The system can perform tasks such as extracting license plate numbers from photos, suggesting vacation destinations based on email interests, and providing recommendations by analyzing delivery receipts, search history, and YouTube viewing patterns.
Privacy controls and data usage
Google designed the feature with privacy protections, setting it to off by default. Users must actively enable Personal Intelligence and can select which specific apps to connect. The feature can be turned off at any time.
"And because this data already lives at Google securely, you don't have to send sensitive data elsewhere to start personalizing your experience," Woodward said. "This is a key differentiator."
According to Google, Gemini does not train directly on users' Gmail inboxes or Google Photos libraries. Instead, the company trains the model on limited information, such as specific prompts and responses, after filtering or obscuring personal data.
The system includes guardrails for sensitive topics, with Gemini designed to avoid making assumptions about health-related data unless users specifically ask about such information.
Rollout and future plans
Personal Intelligence is available on the web, Android, and iOS platforms with all Gemini 3 models. Google plans to expand the feature to more countries and the free tier over time.
The company also announced that the capability will be added to AI Mode in Search in the near future.
Google acknowledged the beta version may produce errors, including inaccurate responses or over-personalization, where the model incorrectly connects unrelated information.
The company is asking users to provide feedback through the thumbs-down button to help improve the system.
The launch positions Google's Gemini against competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT in the increasingly competitive generative AI market, particularly as companies race to develop more personalized AI assistants.
