Key Takeaways
Microsoft has unveiled "vibe working," a new approach to productivity that brings AI agent capabilities to its Microsoft 365 Office applications. The company announced Agent Mode for Excel and Word, along with Office Agent in Copilot chat, designed to enable users to create high-quality documents, spreadsheets, and presentations through simple prompts and iterative collaboration with AI.
Dual AI strategy powers new features
The new capabilities allow users to start with a simple prompt and work iteratively with Copilot as it orchestrates multi-step tasks.
In announcing the features, Sumit Chauhan, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Office Product Group, stated: "Productivity is in our DNA. Others can try and replicate it, but there's no substitute for the real thing."
Microsoft is deploying a multi-model strategy, using OpenAI's GPT-5 model to power Agent Mode in Excel and Word, while utilizing Anthropic's AI models for the chat-based Office Agent.
Chauhan described the new approach, saying: "In the same way vibe coding has transformed software development, the latest reasoning models in Copilot unlock agentic productivity for Office artifacts."
Agent Mode in Excel delivers AI that can "speak Excel" natively, built on the richness of Excel artifacts and OpenAI's latest reasoning models, democratizing access to expert-level capabilities.
The system can generate outputs, evaluate results, fix issues, and repeat the process until outcomes are verified.
Chauhan explained that Agent Mode makes advanced modeling "approachable for most everyone," with the ability to "evaluate results, fix issues, and repeat the processes until the outcome is verified.
It's like you're handing off work to an Excel expert — while you steer and guide."
In Excel, Microsoft reports Agent Mode achieves a 57.2% accuracy rate on the SpreadsheetBench benchmark, positioning it above some competitors but below the 71.3% accuracy of human experts.
Trevor O'Brien, VP of product at Microsoft, defended the results, stating: "We don't optimize for benchmarks, we optimize for real user jobs in Excel. That means solving messy, ambiguous, and complex tasks that reflect how people actually work."
In Word, Agent Mode enables what Microsoft calls "vibe writing," where the AI drafts content and suggests changes while asking for user input during the process, making writing feel "more like a dialogue than a task," resulting in "faster iteration, better ideas, and a more engaging writing experience."
Office agent brings chat-first document creation
The Office Agent in Copilot creates PowerPoint presentations and Word documents through a chat interface, with users providing prompts and the AI conducting web-based research to produce complete documents.
This feature is designed to deliver what Chauhan describes as "work, quite frankly, that a first-year consultant would do, delivered in minutes."
Availability and market competition
The new features are rolling out in preview, with Agent Mode available in Word and Excel on the web for Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Personal or Family users through Microsoft's Frontier program, with desktop versions and PowerPoint support coming later.
Office Agent is initially limited to Personal and Family users in the United States.
Microsoft corporate VP Sumit Chauhan told Axios that for consumers, "Ultimately, it'll be part of a premium package."
Microsoft is competing against Google, which is adding generative AI to its Workspace apps, along with Apple, OpenAI, Anthropic, Canva, Notion, and others developing agent-style AI systems for business and productivity applications.
