Key takeaways
Victor Nguyen, who lives in the Eastover subdivision of New Orleans East, recently completed "Listen to Our Bells," an original Christmas song he wrote and composed with the help of AI-powered music applications.
The project represents the latest in his collection of holiday-themed songs, which he has been creating over the past two years.
From acoustic to AI-enhanced production
Nguyen's home, which resembles a "sound bath" filled with instruments ranging from a jumbo-sized tuning fork to an extra-long ram's horn, reflects his passion for music and sound.
The content creator began his songwriting journey two years ago, systematically creating songs for various holidays.
"I started writing a Valentine's Day song, and then like an Easter song, and then a Thanksgiving song. I even wrote a Halloween song," Nguyen told Fox8 News.
The Christmas song was the missing piece in his holiday repertoire. Despite his favorite Christmas song being "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," Nguyen brought a different energy to his own creation.
He wrote the song for his family and his faith, and performed an acoustic version during the news station's visit to his home.
AI delivers studio-quality sound at a fraction of the cost
Faced with the high costs of traditional studio production, Nguyen turned to artificial intelligence to enhance his acoustic composition.
The AI-powered music app allowed him to add professional-level production elements that would typically require significant financial investment.
"It gives me like thousands of dollars' worth of production, to have multiple instruments, and layering, a lot of harmonies," Nguyen explained. He described his first experience with AI music production as transformative.
"My first song through AI, I was mind-blown. I couldn't believe how fast the turnaround time was and how it produced what I had envisioned my song could be.
The prompt that I gave it was like, 'Create a festive holiday spirit song with bells, with a nice intro, with trumpets,'" he said.
Despite using AI for production, Nguyen maintains that the creative foundation remains entirely his own work.
"I pretty much created the foundation of the song through the melody, the lyrics, and the chord progression, and what AI did was put its own touch to it," he stated.
Future plans and artistic vision
The acoustic version of "Listen to Our Bells" is currently available on Instagram and YouTube. Nguyen is still developing the final version of the song and hopes to release a fuller production to a broader audience.
Whether the final version will feature AI-generated elements or live musicians remains undecided, with Nguyen indicating that the decision will likely be made by next Christmas.
Nguyen remains unfazed by potential criticism of his work, focusing instead on the personal meaning behind his creation.
